Microcellulose from Betel Husk Fiber as Filler in Bioplastic

Betel nut husk fiber has a reasonably high cellulose content. Meanwhile, bioplastics nowadays are mostly made of Poly Vinyl Alcohol (PVA), with one its limitations being tensile strength and other properties regarding mechanical. Thus, this study aims to isolate microcellulose from areca use the as filler in bioplastic, where is combined PVA. The intention understand effect adding betel fibers on properties, including biodegradability PVA-based bioplastic films. This research three steps: isolating peel by delignification, pulping, bleaching. next step hydrolysis obtain microcellulose. last preparation films using solution casting method, five different ratios content bioplastic. characterization FTIR spectra shows absorption several peaks, such O-H, C-H, C-O functional groups. mechanical testing results variation show that best characteristics was PL5, which highest content, 8 MPa 10.2% for elongation, respectively. biodegradation test (PL5) 82% within eight weeks, while Indonesian National Standard (SNI) number 7188.7:2016, it 100% 60 days.
